Adult Aural Rehabilitation: What Is It and Does It Work?
Arthur Boothroyd, PhD
Hearing loss can have serious effects on:
auditory function (the things one can do in the clinic, or research lab, if asked)
activity (the things one needs or wants to do in every day life–especially communicate via spoken language)
participation (in social, vocational, and avocational activities)
quality of life (self-perceived)
After receiving hearing aid(s), cochlear implant(s), or hearing assistance technology, the purpose of aural rehabilitation is to minimize the effect of hearing loss on aspects of life listed above.
